Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, Office for Institutional Equity
Duke University/Duke University Health System
“Since 2003, I’ve been serving as the Vice President of the Office for Institutional Equity and Chief Diversity Officer for Duke University and Duke University Health System. In addition to my broad administrative responsibilities, I have appointments in the departments of Community & Family Medicine and Psychology and Neuroscience. Last year, I finished two 2-year terms as president of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE). It was a wonderful opportunity to engage with chief diversity officers from colleges and universities across our nation. Given my specialization in implicit bias education and training, I’ve had the opportunity to not only provide education to Duke staff and faculty, but to visit higher education institutions, corporations and hospitals across the country.
I frequently reflect on my participation as a member of Class VI and Program Chair the next year. I can’t think of another experience that has given me more of a sense of the major institutions across our State. Seems like just yesterday when I found myself in a supermarket, struggling to purchase enough food for “my family of five,” and then a couple months later, viewing the impact of acid rain on the trees that cover many of our mountains. Special memories…impactful experiences.”
