Food Drive

In light of the pending pause in federal funding for SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown, the Class 32 Government session planning committee invites Class 33 to participate in an optional food drive by bringing items to session next week. A note from the planning team:

More than 1.4 million North Carolinians who rely on monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are now at risk of delayed or missed November payments — a disruption the state warns could heighten food insecurity and strain local resources. In the Triangle alone, approximately 83,000 Wake County, 34,000 Durham County, 9,000 Orange County, and 5,000 Chatham County residents could be directly affected.

To help support our neighbors during this period, we’ll be collecting nonperishable food donations at next week’s session for distribution to local food pantries. A designated collection table will be available Wednesday and Thursday, and we’ll gather all donations by Thursday, November 6, to share with families in need. Thank you for your generosity and compassion — and we look forward to seeing you next week.

Suggested items:

  • Whole grain breakfast / granola bars with protein
  • Plain instant oatmeal packets (left in original box)
  • Peanut butter in plastic jars (14oz or smaller); 100% peanuts, no added ingredients
  • Cans of tuna or chicken
  • 1 lb bags of long grain rice, brown rice, beans (black, pinto, chickpeas, lentils)
  • 1 lb boxes of whole grain noodles
  • Cans of spaghetti sauce (15 oz or smaller; no glass please!)
  • Individually packaged raisins, nuts, trail mix (no added sugar)
  • Whole grain crackers in single serving sizes
  • 100% juice: multi-juice box size (shelf-stable)
  • Fruit / applesauce cups or cans, not in syrup, no added sugar
  • Squeezable pouches (such as GoGo Squeez) of fruits & veggies
