LNC Class XX Application Period Now Open

E-mail Print PDF

Leadership North Carolina is pleased to announce that the application period for LNC Class XX is now open.  Interested applicants can access the online application form by clicking on the "Apply Now" button below.  The application period will close on June 30, 2012.

Open to all citizens of the state, Leadership North Carolina seeks a class of approximately 50 leaders who represent the various geographic regions and communities of the state from the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Special effort is made to ensure diversity among class members (race, age, gender, geography, occupation, stage of career, etc.). The mission of Leadership North Carolina is to inform, develop, and engage committed leaders by broadening their understanding of and involvement in issues and opportunities facing our state. The program is aimed at individuals who have demonstrated community and professional leadership involvement.

Program sessions give class members a broader understanding of the state, with a focus on issues in the topic-specific areas of Economic Development, Education, Environment, Government, and Health and Human Services. Participants learn about the critical issues in these areas through discussions with top officials of the state, professionals in the areas, field trips, and experiential activities. Graduates join a powerful alumni base of over 900 leaders, with continuing opportunities for networking, exposure, and service. They are exposed to chances to serve on boards and commissions and in other community leadership positions.

Characteristics of a successful applicant include commitment, motivation, and interest in serving the state; demonstrated voluntary leadership in community affairs; desire and willingness to seek key volunteer and/or appointed leadership roles; an occupational commitment to remain in the state; and long-term commitment to playing a personal role in helping to shape North Carolina's future. A limited number of partial, need-based scholarships are available.

“These hands-on exercises bring the issue to life.”—Member of Leadership North Carolina Class XIX

Experiential learning is a core component of the Leadership North Carolina program.  During Class XIX’s Government session, participants were tasked with balancing a municipal budget by playing Budgetopolis.  During their Education session, they experienced hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) instruction using Lego Robotics technology.  But perhaps the most engaging activity of the program year thus far took place during the February Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Health and Human Services session in Charlotte.
